Business The Solution

Entrepreneur Bootstrapping Business Idea – Run a Catering Business Out of Your Home

If you you like the idea of cooking for others, being part of the action for big events, and you’re a really good people person, then running a catering business may be for you.

Running a catering business can be similar to running an event planning business. You are not just making food (or contracting someone else to make food). You also have to provide or rent the silverware, tables, chairs, a tent occasionally, table decorations, and so on.

Personal attitude is also something that is critical. If you are the type of person that easily gets stressed or upset when things go wrong, this business may not be for your. When you are working in an environment like this, there is no room for people with anger management issues.

For small events this can easily be a one person show, but if you want to grow the business to any size, you are eventually going to have to have employees. You can reduce the amount of actual employees by subcontracting out the work of the furniture rental and place settings etc. This will leave you only with the food preparation.

You are going to need a place to prepare the food as well. Some banquet facilities will let you use the kitchen, others do not have that capacity. You will need to make sure not to schedule jobs that are beyond your means. When you are starting out, you may only have the ability to cater for gatherings or 15 or less. As you grow you will understand you limits better.

Another angle you can take, is to provide catering for a single event hall, so that the hall becomes your virtual kitchen. You can cater for a country club, a convention center, a health club, or private companies. Once your develop these types of relationships, the work can be very steady and you won’t have to go find it.
